Best Practices in Developing Self-Advocacy Skills in Transition Age Youth

About The Session:

Transitioning from high school to the adult world can be daunting for youth with disabilities. Strong self-advocacy skills are needed to be successful in employment or post-secondary training and education. VR counselors have the unique opportunity to empower these youth and teach self-advocacy skills. Research informed practice for helping youth with disabilities develop life-long transition skills will be discussed. Counseling strategies for assisting with this transition will be explored during this interactive session

About The Presenter(s):

Judy Schmidt, Ed.D, CRC, LPCA:


is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Program at UNC-Chapel Hill. She earned a BS in Psychology from Meredith College, a MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, and Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction for Higher Education from Argosy University in Washington, D.C.  She manages the clinical training education for the counseling program and serves as the Rehabilitation Counselor at UNC Hospital in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  She has worked for 30 years in the field of vocational rehabilitation and private counseling.

Eileen Burker, Ph.D., CRC:

is a Professor and Division Director for the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.  She earned a BS in Psychology from Rider College and an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling with an emphasis in Vocational Evaluation.  She earned an MS degree and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Auburn University. She has been a professor at UNC-Chapel Hill for more than 23 years and serves as the Clinical Psychologist for the UNC Hospital Heart and Lung Transplant Programs.

Dara Chan, Sc.D., CRC:

is an Assistant Professor for the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.  She earned a BA in psychology from Tulane University, a MHS in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Florida, and a Sc.D. in Rehabilitation Science from Boston University.  Dr. Chan joined the faculty at UNC-CH over 3 years ago.
