Smooth Transitions: Tips & Strategies for VR Counselors Assisting Students with Disabilities Entering Universities

About The Session:

Graduating from high school and entering higher education brings immediate change for students with disabilities.  As North Carolina implements the unified state plan in coordination with WIOA, there will be a major focus on better preparation for students with disabilities transitioning to higher education.  This presentation is focused on providing helpful information and strategies for School Transition VR Counselors as they prepare and guide students along the path of transition to universities. 

About The Presenter(s):

Richard "RJ" Kilgore:


is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University where he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and his Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.  After a graduate internship with the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services focusing on school transition in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, RJ was hired by NCDVRS in Wilmington, NC as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor serving New Hanover County Schools.  He served in that position for 2 ½    years and was then hired as the Disability Resource Center Coordinator at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.  RJ utilizes his experience as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor Associate to continuously create and implement ideas as well as programs to ensure students with disabilities are successful throughout the various transitions in life.
