Teaching Academics to Students with Significant Intellectual Disabilities Using Assistive Technology

About The Session:
In this session teachers, speech and language pathologists, teacher assistants and other professionals will acquire information on how to use assistive technology to increase access for students with significant intellectual disabilities. Participants will be given examples that show how elements of a grade level thematic lesson can be made accessible with adapted books, communication devices, Boardmaker pictures, iPad, virtual manipulatives, etc. Assistive devices can enhance the student’s understanding of the content and their ability to express their understanding.

Dr. Karena Cooper-Duffy:
is a Full Professor in the Special Education Program at Western Carolina University. She has been teaching at the university for 18 years and specializes in teaching students with significant intellectual disabilities. Her research is practitioner friendly and includes strategies on how to implement current research based strategies to instruct students with significant intellectual disabilities. Specific areas addressed include teaching functional skills, academic skills, and community based skills. Current work is on the collaboration between families and professionals. Dr. Cooper-Duffy presents her work at local, national, and international conferences
