Poster Session: The Accessible Icon Project

About The Presenter(s):

Presenter: Brendon Hildreth, Co-Director of The Accessible Icon Project in NC,  Person with a Disability

About The Presentation:

The presentation will allow people to see the new Accessible Icon logo that has been approved for use in North Carolina.  The goal is to replace the current static "handicapped" logo with a new "accessible" logo meant to depict that people with disabilities can be active and engaged in their lives and decision making.  Brendon Hildreth, a 26 year old man with cerebral palsy and hearing loss, successfully got the use of the new icon approved in 2012 when he moved here from the Boston area.

Brendon volunteers at Accessible Icon, which is quickly changing the way disability is viewed on public signing. The standard handicapped parking space has a symbol of a rigid individual in a wheelchair. The Accessible Icon Project is looking to change that emblem into a symbol of accessibility-the new image is of a body moving forward in a wheelchair. The project promotes inclusion for persons with disabilities.

The image shows that persons with disabilities are not stagnant but are out in the community and moving forward. Brendon has been a huge advocate of changing the standard icon into this symbol of progress. He has worked with Craven Community College, Fort Macon State Park, Hanging Rock State Park, many businesses, the city of Durham and the city of New Bern to change the handicap parking spaces into this accessibility icon.
