About The Session:
2.8 million Military members have been deployed in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and are returning in unprecedented numbers with physical and psychological disabilities. The State VR system and Vocational Rehabilitation counselors are in an ideal position to assist in their successful reintegration into the civilian workforce. This workshop will identify the best practices from current research on counseling skills and assistive technology most likely to produce positive vocational outcomes for veterans.

Dee Drake:
is a Research Science Specialist with the Durham VA and has an MS in Applied Psychology from Jacksonville State University and an MS in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her professional experience includes 24 years in non-profit and state agencies working with children in the child welfare and mental health system, adults with psychiatric disabilities and substance abuse issues, individuals and families experiencing homelessness, and veterans.
Judy Schmidt, Ed.D., CRC, LPCA
is a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program at UNC-Chapel Hill. She earned a BS in Psychology from Meredith College, a MS in Rehabilitation Counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, and Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction for Higher Education from Argosy University in Washington, D.C. She manages the clinical training education for the counseling program and serves as the Rehabilitation Counselor at UNC Hospital in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has worked for 30 years in the field of vocational rehabilitation and private counseling.
